5 General Rules of Creating a Design

In my Layout 2 class we learned that there are 5 rules to keep in mind when planning and executing a design.

  1. Keep It Simple

Overdecorating a design will cause it to lose meaning and distract from the message that is trying to be conveyed.

2. Have a Focal Point

Including and prioritizing a focal point is good practice when designing. It is, in most cases, the first in the hierarchy of elements and the beginning of the eye flow. This helps direct your viewer to notice and stay interested in your design.

3. Make Bold Moves

It is important when making a creative decision to make big moves and to do it on purpose. Aimless design will cause the viewer to lose interest.

4. Use Negative Space

Instead of thinking of how to fill negative space, think of how to make negative space work for you.

5. Be consistent

In order to make your design look cohesive, be sure that you use continuity with your fonts, colors, and elements in your design.
