Fonts through the Decades

As a designer, it is interesting to look at past trends. In particular, typography and fonts. I am going to break down some trends we see throughout the later 20th and early 21st century.

Roaring 20s: Art Deco

I love Art Deco. It is so lavish and classy, maybe over the top. However, this perfectly describes the 20s. A time of an economic boom and winning WW1, lots to celebrate.

1950s: Midcentury

The midcentury fonts are fun and playful, with lots of script font choices. This is around the time the advertising industry boomed making these font very recognizable to this era.

1980s: Retro

Like the clothes and hair choices of this era, the fonts and typography were bold. Also around this era, they seemed to start incorporating typography as an element of their design.

2000s: Nostalgic

Growing up in the early 2000s, alot of these fonts are extremely nostalgic. One ad that is burned in my memory is the anti-piracy “You wouldn’t steal a car” video. They use very edgy fonts with drop shadows in this video and that seems to be a trend throughout this decade.

2020s: Current Trends

Thanks to easy access to the internet, trends in the current day change so rapidly. One trend I have been enjoying right now is organically shaped letter fonts. The ones that look alive and flowy. These paired with a san serif font is chef’s kiss.
