As a designer and a history buff, I love looking at design from a historical point of view as to why certain campaigns and “propaganda” were efficient in changing minds or influencing the public.
Throughout both World Wars, the American government launched a campaign to encourage American families to grow their own food. This boosted morale on the home front whilst avoiding food shortages and alleviated the burden on commercial farmers who were feeding the troops abroad.
I think with the current economy and food prices, it would be beneficial if we adopted this same sentiment.
Many “Victory Garden” posters developed in the 1940s stir up feelings of personal responsibility and patriotic duty. Great design creates great change.
